When your puppy turns into a tiny shark

Reader,

There’s a reason puppy owners joke about living with a “land shark.” One minute your Golden is sweet and cuddly, the next they’re coming at you with teeth sharp enough to pierce through jeans.

It feels personal… but it’s not.
It’s just biology.

Teething is one of the messiest, most misunderstood phases of puppyhood.

And if you don’t know what’s normal, and what’s not, you’ll spend those months frustrated, covered in bite marks, and wondering if you adopted a Golden or a piranha.

Here’s the breakdown you need:

What’s normal:

  • Mouthing hands, clothes, and just about anything in reach
  • Chewing constantly to relieve gum pressure
  • “Bitey zoomies” when overtired or overstimulated

What’s not normal:

  • Biting with real aggression behind it
  • Guarding objects and refusing to drop them
  • Snapping or growling when approached

So what do you do? Redirect, don’t punish.

Swap your hand or sleeve for a safe chew.

Offer a frozen rope toy or washcloth to soothe sore gums.
And if the biting ramps up out of nowhere? Chances are, your puppy needs a nap, not a lecture.

Teething doesn’t last forever… but how you handle it sets the stage for your Golden’s manners for life.

At Fox Ridge, we lay the groundwork early by handling our puppies daily, starting gentle training, and guiding them through these natural phases.

By the time they come home, they’re already learning that soft mouths get rewarded.

Your job is just to keep building on it.

Hey Reader, Goldens are known for a lot of things… their loyalty, their big goofy grins, their endless love for fetch. But there’s one thing they don’t get enough credit for: their nose. Your Golden’s sense of smell is insane. We’re talking up to 100,000 times more powerful than yours. While you catch a whiff of dinner cooking, they smell every single ingredient, the pan you used, and maybe even what you had for lunch yesterday. That nose isn’t just for sniffing out snacks… it’s the key to...

Hey Reader, Not every breeder talks about this part of the process… but we do, because it matters. When a Fox Ridge puppy is born, we’re not just raising them. We’re learning them. We watch how they interact with littermates. We notice who’s bold, who’s more reserved, who loves a lap, who thrives in play.We take note of their confidence, sensitivity, and the way they move through the world. It’s what we call the “puppy interview.”And while it’s not a test or a scorecard, it’s our way of...

Hey Reader Dog’s walked on leashes sometimes don’t care that they’re on a leash… and they definitely don’t care that you’re attached to the other end of it, especially if they’re on a mission. So, if you dread walking your dog because… well… your 70 lb Golden is actually walking you, keep reading because we’ve got a trick for you. First thing’s first... you are the boss. That doesn’t mean being harsh or yanking them back every five steps. It means setting the tone before you ever hit the...
